70s-ish vibes and good things

*ignore the grossness of my shoes and knees*

Me being very ~model status~.
*Vogue by Madonna plays softly in the background while Anna Wintour sobs*

ps: The stars are one my face, not because my face refuses to cooperate,(which is true), but because I'm a world famous model and can't handle the paparazzi.

small moodboard-esque thing from a while back (clockwise:) sunflower coaster; plant decor from my room; Picnic At Hanging Rock DVD insert; sunflower earring; gold necklace; gold thread; hourglass pendant; little pin; bronze colored sparkly bracelet with rose thing glued to it.

the lightbulbs in my house soak everything in a weird 70s sepia tone light that makes my life seem a little more like a Wes Anderson film.

oldish collage; you may have seen it on The Wandering because I'm now a regular contributor (!!)

Oh, and also, I'm doing a research project on how women's liberation movements in the 60s and 70s led to the development of third wave feminism in the early 90s so yay. If any of you super cool readers have any sources  on women's liberation, you can let me know in the comments or in an email.

5 (WOMENS!) fashion trends guys hate

If you’ve been reading anything on the internet or on fashion magazines recently, you’ve probably seen countless articles about women’s fashion trends that GUYS hate. I’ve decided to invite a few ~real life guys~ to give their opinions on their least favorite fashion trends; because everyone knows that the most important judge of what a woman is wearing, is a man.

--

1) confidence
That's right ladiezz, if you're a female, and you love your body, dudes HATE that. I mean seriously, what do you girls think you're doing, you can't just do something that doesn't seek the constant approval of a man, it's just gross. "Insecurity is hot. " - real life guy

2) comfort
All girls dress for guys, and guys love girls that put a lot of effort into their clothes (but also, don’t put too much effort, it makes you seem like you’re trying too hard) If you want to make your man happy, *sic* dress like you’re always ready for a party, (but look laid back and relaxed). We know you womenfolk think men love the natural look, but when we wake up and see you without makeup, it feels like you're launching a personal attack on our livelihood (this may be hard for you to understand). Makeup makes you look nice, (but as always, not too much)

3) dressing for yourself

“There is nothing uglier than a girl who only dresses to make herself feel good and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks.”

4) individuality of any sort

Oh my gosh it’s so irritating and gross when girls think they can just dress however they like. But when girls all dress the same it’s really boring, and makes them look stupid.

3) peplums (looks like maternity wear), beanies (dumb), wedge sneakers, floppy hats (makes you look old), open-side shirts (too revealing), bright lipstick (gooey), heavy makeup, bandeaus, pointy heels, high waisted jeans/shorts/skirts (makes you look frumpy), fake nails, fold over boots, high heels (shows how clumsy women are), pantsuits (you're a woman, not a man), drop crotch pants, hair bows (makes you look too young), bangles (too clangy), oversized sweaters (cover up too much), mullet dresses (Where's the party? You're covering the back *sic*), leggings, jeggings (ditch the jeggings, your man will be much happier *sic*), shoulder pads, leg warmers (not the 80s), Uggs, neon (not in good taste), oversized glasses .
I know what you girls are thinking, "What? We might as well walk around naked!" All right, but honestly, it's a little too revealing for us guys.

*the parts that say “*sic*” are literally words that came from an actual website that people read for actual fashion advice. Credit to All Women Stalk and Huff Post (but I don’t know why you would want to take credit for this.)

baby Neil and baby David

/this post was supposed to go up on January 8, but I never got to take the photos and I'm sorry/

If I had kids I would probably name them Neil and David. Actually probably not,  but that's not the point right now. The point is
a. the lovely and beautiful David Bowie's birthday was today and I celebrated by gazing at photos of baby/ middle aged Bowie (which is an activity that is really a appropriate any day and I suggest you do that right now).
b. I'm currently undertaking the long and painful task of desensitizing myself to Heart of Gold by Neil Young. Um, so far pretty much no progress since I still burst into tears every time I hear it. But really:

"I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old."

Maybe listening to it repeatedly will help, but maybe not.

What was the point of this post again?

Right now a day at school for me is kind of like an episode of Daria/Freaks and Geeks/ My So Called Life/ Twin Peaks (with like twice as much of me murdering people, you know)/ Sabrina the teenage witch/ insert 90s teen cliché here. (extra points to me for all those pop culture references)

Simone Rocha Fall 2011

{ETA: Simone Rocha Fall 2011 from stylebistro.com}

Closeup of Bowie pin which the Geometry teacher noticed was for his birthday!

I wore this outfit to school Monday and now I'll reenact 92% of my classmates:
"what are you wearing?"
"why are you wearing that?"
"what is wrong with you"
etc

And most of the time I just tried to  channel my inner Enid Coleslaw. Speaking of Enid, this is my new life goal.

You guys!!!! It's a little Enid doll!

I like the length of the jacket, because I really like that it goes down to my knees, but the sleeves made it almost impossible for me to do anything and made me feel like Tom Hanks in Big.

I really want to make this blog (content and aesthetic) better because right now, whenever I look at it, I regurgitate a little bit.  So yeah, if you have any ideas let me know~

don't you see how weak I get

Yesterday my Rookie Yearbook 2 arrived and I read it today while listening to Spilling Lines by Poliça and I felt really, truly at peace with everything

I'm starting to realize
a) how to genuinely just not care what people think of me or of anything (not in an apathetic way, more in a filtering out negative energy way) and it's actually getting really easy.

b) how to walk through the halls and be content with what I have with less anxiety about what I don't have (grades, friends)

c) how to live in the moment (ew ew I sound like a high school guidance counselor and I'm very sorry) but I'm understanding how to accept imperfection (actually I really want to work on this post for about an hour more to really get my point across but I'm just going to leave it like this because I'm only as perfect as I am)

d) the human race is actually pretty amazing I mean obviously we're not perfect but we're creating amazing things and we're living people and saving people and a thousand things are happening at once and "that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse

e) listening to Flawless while cleaning the garbage out of your locker/walking through the halls is incredibly life-affirming. It makes you feel incredible- nay! It makes you feel flawless. That is probably the only time I will ever allow myself to make a Beyonce pun (and also Blogger is now trying to tell me that Beyonce isn't a word and I can't find the accent mark for the "e" as my faith in the internet slowly declines. ugh.)

f) happiness?¿ I'm sure I haven't reached an apex of enlightenment yet, but I know that I feel happier and calmer now than I have in months.

*cue smiley face emoticons*

I'm happy that my outfit ended up looking purposeful even though I put no effort. At first it was a cross country uniform but hen I wanted to wear the bracelet and the skirt, because they seemed like they were both in the same category in terms of "Yes, I'm cool, no, don't talk to me" vibes. I changed the laces of my boots to my sneaker laces to add to the ~sporty spice~ element of the sweater. In retrospect I attribute this outfit to listening to Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac and Wannabe by the Spice girls alternatingly.

now you're gone, are they moving on

photo by Yookoo that partly inspired my outfit

I'm trying to layer more, because right now my layering game is about a 6 (on a scale of 1-10), but I'm working on it.
-
haha yes, my room is a mess (woahh that rhymed), but  my books are color coded so its okay.

it looks like i'm trying to smuggle a llama in my sleeves.

Vivian Girls - Share the Joy (fits the aesthetic and the post title is from one of the songs)
It's a really nice album and has a very fall, hot chocolate, spending the whole day reading - vibe

A really lovely old pin.
I think it's supposed to depict the Roman goddess Venus (goddess of beauty).
When I bought it from a yard sale, it was just a flat piece of china (or something similar) and I taped a pin to the back.

heyyy it's a bag made out of a book (I'm so smart) (not really) I made it with this Rookie DIY.

The only thing that could have completed this outfit for me (actually, there's a lot of things, aka buy me nice clothes please) would be this UO tartan cardigan. Does anyone have $79 they don't really need?
-
I normally wouldn't have been able to wear my outfit today seeing as it's (NEGATIVE) 16 degrees F outside. Luckily, school's closed today and tomorrow because of dangerously cold weather. (give me a second to explode because I can stay home for two more days) ADFGHJKL;'QWRETWEROPIY[ZXCJZXBC,M. !@#$67dsakfj

It's not that I hate school or learning at all, it's more that the thought of school (the work, the teachers, the adolescents, waking up early etc) gives me immense amounts of stress.

For everyone who had to end their vacations today, I'm very sorry and hope you  get through this.

In other news, happy 28th birthday to Alex Turner!  (If you're obsessed with Arctic Monkeys, please e-mail me so we can have neurotic conversations about their perfection. )

cotton emporium sweater (marshalls), j.crew shirt (thrifted), brown polka dot dress (childhood), Venus pin (secondhand), BOOKbag {I'm sorry} (handmade)

rebel girl, she was the queen of my world

So recently I've been thinking a lot about female power (or more specifically, our lack thereof). And watching a lot of inspirational videos about strong women and feminine representation in society. I don't think I'm fully to write anything about FEMINISM on this blog without sounding a bit ignorant but I'm reading and taking notes on The Second Sex by Simone De Beauvoir and trying to think deeply about what she's saying and I really think that would help me collect my thoughts more cohesively.

books

{Rough Magic: A Biography of Sylvia Plath by Paul Alexander}
I'm about halfway through the book right now and Sylvia's life is really fascinating. Throughout high school (and much of her adult life) Sylvia seems to struggle with the societal expectation that women are expected to neither display nor act on any sexual desire and have becoming a mother as their greatest aspiration in life. Obviously Sylvia decided to aspire for more and I look up to her as a person and a poet.

{I Am Malala: Malala Yousafzai}
Biography of Malala Yousafzai, the coolest, bravest, most beautiful, intelligent, kind, perfect girl on Earth. Basically, you should read it.

{The Second Sex- Simone De Beauvoir}
This is probably one of the most complex books I've ever read because it discusses the physiological and societal aspects of "the pervasiveness and intensity and mysteriousness of the history of women's oppression" The book was written in 1949, making the language a bit complicated.

I took notes on the first chapter of the book while I was trying to figure it out.
(the pen is quotes from the book and the pencil is my own thoughts)

*sorry for the spaghetti stains*

pins

Jane Lane, Lisa Simpson, April Ludgate, Frida Kahlo (4 people with endless girl power)

movies

{The Runaways}Kristin Stewart and Dakota Fanning as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie (!) in the story of the all-girl rock band "The Runaways". I cannot put into words how wonderful this movie is.

more thoughts

I love this Balenciaga ad because even though the woman is looking down at her hands (submissive?), she still exudes a sense of being incredibly powerful, which isn't really something you see that often in ads. It would normally be a woman portrayed in a very vulnerable state {because of course, all women are weak/vulnerable} and they're valuable to the media when portrayed like that. But the stark monochromes and angular design of the clothing radiates power and control; [Marina Diamandis/ Power and Control: The human inability does not mean that I am weak.] But why must women look weak? Chimamanda Ngozi: “I have chosen to no longer be apologetic for my femininity”. You never see the model’s face, and therefore she could be incredibly beautiful, but it doesn't really matter because power is not dependent on beauty.

<I'm making the assumption that Balenciaga had a feminist agenda in this ad.>

videos
My feminism spiral started last week, when I saw this spoken word video of Pretty by Katie Makkai.

I got really angry at our society for even creating the concept of "pretty" after watching this (well, after watching it about 156 times)

This is a lovely PSA made by Lesley Gore featuring extremely cool girls (Miranda July, Tavi, Alexa Chung, Lena Dunham) with an even lovelier song.

I made a Youtube playlist of all the videos I've been watching about fffeminism (tw - reproductive rights, rape culture). If you watch them all in one sitting you might cry (you might not.) (I cried) (But I have the emotional maturity of a small child so...)

girl power y'all
